Blepharoplasty may be done under local anesthesia only, or you may choose to be sedated during the surgery. During your preoperative consultation, you will discuss the benefits and disadvantages of each alternative with your surgeon. Patients with a very low pain threshold or needle phobia will benefit from light sedation. This is not general anesthesia and does not require intubation and you will not experience nausea or vomiting after the operation. On the other hand, if your pain threshold is moderate to high, you will find local anesthesia an attractive option, as you can drive yourself home the same day and you will avoid the costs related to the anesthesia.
