Human papillomavirus, known as HPV, is the culprit behind eyelid warts. These lesions are benign in nature and usually appear in middle-aged adults and the elderly. Most papilloma lesions are small, flesh-colored, and painless, but some may grow significantly and cause irritation or itchiness.
Several topical creams have been developed to treat warts around the eyes. They work to “soften” the wart, making it easy to peel away from the skin. Other alternatives for removing warts include burning (cautery) or freezing (cryotherapy). However, the most effective treatment is excision. This option consists of complete surgical removal of the mass under local anesthesia. The benefit of this option is that it removes the mass entirety, eliminating the possibility of recurrence. Another advantage of this procedure is that it’s quick and painless. Finally, excision allows the surgeon to send the specimen for biopsy.
