There are basically two alternatives to reduce the size or eliminate a chalazion. The first option is to inject a steroid medication into the site of the chalazion. This helps to reduce the size of the bump but does not generally get rid of it. It also does not work every time but has about a 60% efficacy rate. The best treatment for a chalazion is to remove it with a surgical procedure. It is the only way to eliminate the chalazion permanently because, through it, the blocked oil gland is removed. The procedure is a minor surgery done in a doctor’s office or procedure room under local anesthesia. If the patient prefers, mild sedation may be used during the procedure.
