The best way to treat a stye is to use hot compresses on the inflamed area three times a day, massaging the area with the compress for about 5 minutes each time. Using distilled water, moisten a clean gauze to apply the compress. The water should be hot but not so much as to cause a skin burn. Avoid using chamomile since most tea bags contain preservatives that can worsen the inflammation.
Topical antibiotic ointments or drops will also help to reduce the inflammation and eliminate the infection. These should be prescribed by an ophthalmologist or oculoplastic surgeon. Do not use drops that contain steroids for prolonged periods as they may raise ocular pressure.
Draining the stye may be indicated in some cases, especially if there is no improvement with medical treatment (compresses and topical antibiotics). Don’t try to drain the stye yourself as this can cause an abscess in the eyelid. Your ophthalmologist will determine if the stye has to be drained and will do so with the right technique in the office.
