The great majority of patients will tolerate the procedure even under local anesthesia. Patients describe a sensation of pressure and discomfort but rarely pain during the operation. Having said this, a few will request to have the procedure done under mild sedation. Fortunately, pain is infrequent during the recovery period after surgery.
