Surgery is the best treatment for a chalazion that has not responded to warm compresses or topical steroid injections. The reason surgical excision is so effective is that surgeons can remove the chalazion contents and its capsule, eliminating the risk of recurrence. Chalazion surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. The surgery takes about 15 minutes and is virtually painless. Because the incision is placed on the inside of the eyelid, there is no risk of a visible scar.
