Eyelid retraction is an undesirable consequence of lower eyelid blepharoplasty. It occurs after aggressive skin removal or failure to address eyelid laxity during the operation. Lid retraction has medical as well as psychological repercussions. Medically, it may interfere with corneal lubrication to the point of putting the eye at risk of permanent scarring or infections. At the same time, this complication takes a significant emotional toll on the patient. Therefore, lid retraction should be managed promptly by a specialist with experience in corrective eyelid surgery.
