A stye is localized inflammation near the edge of the eyelid caused by a bacterial infection. This infection is usually acute and may cause significant pain and tenderness. Styes manifest as a red bump along the rim of the eyelid. A stye may be external if it originates at the base of the eyelashes, or internal if it affects an oil gland within the eyelid.
