In most cases, stitches will have to be removed, but it will depend on the suture material used by the surgeon. Absorbable sutures, such as Vicryl or Catgut, will not have to be removed. There is one problem with these sutures, though: their propensity to cause inflammation of the incision! This inflammation may cause the final scar to be more conspicuous than desired and less elegant. The goal of the surgeon is to achieve an invisible scar and one way to accomplish this is to use non-absorbable sutures to close the incision. There is minimal pain and discomfort when removing the stitches, and it is well worth the benefit of a beautiful scar. Usually, stitches are removed on day 6 after the surgery.
