In the past, there was some stigma about men seeking facial plastic surgery. However, cultural changes and a shift in society’s perception of beauty have changed the way we see plastic surgery today– less as an exercise in vanity and more as a means to look vigorous and energetic. Therefore, more men are visiting plastic surgeons to improve their look. Generally, men seek plastic surgery because they feel young and full of energy, but their eyes present them as aged or tired. Excess skin over the lashes and deep wrinkles or bags under the eyes include undesirable aspects men want to eliminate.
The most important point to consider when contemplating eyelid plastic surgery is the surgeon’s experience in male operations. The plastic surgery approach for women differs from that used for men. A procedure that works in a female will feminize a man’s face. Therefore, cosmetic surgeons must tailor operations to satisfy the male patient’s expectations without altering their masculine look.
The brow lift, eyelid lift, and lower blepharoplasty make up the most sought-after procedures for men.
The endoscopic brow lift is employed when excess tissue over the lashes is due to a droopy brow. Men, in general, have lower set brows than women. Therefore, it is quite common that a male with “droopy eyelids” has heavy brows and would benefit from this operation. The key to achieving the best results in a male brow lift is to avoid an arched brow. The surgeon has to place the incisions so that the patient’s brow is horizontally raised to an adequate height. Instead of an arched brow, the surgeon must aim for a T-shaped male brow.
Also known as an “eyelid lift,” this operation is selected when redundant eyelid skin encroaches on the eyelashes. It consists of marking the excess skin and removing it under local anesthesia, with careful attention to incision placement and crease fixation. Redundant skin appears with age, so this operation is usually reserved for older patients.
Also known as the lower lid blepharoplasty, this procedure is arguably the most popular facial plastic operation in men. Few things can age a person as much as pronounced under-eye bags. Most men who seek lower blepharoplasty do so because they look tired and aged despite feeling energetic. Many of them are in the workplace and living their most productive years. These patients don’t necessarily want to look younger, but they want to look their age and desire their appearance to reflect their energy. Lower lid blepharoplasty is done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia and mild sedation.
Eyelid plastic surgery among men is on the rise, and while many provider options may exist, it is essential to choose a surgeon with experience in male plastic surgery. This will guarantee a more natural outcome with less risk of complications.
