Blepharitis is a very common inflammatory condition seen by eyelid specialists. It affects the base of the eyelashes, creating local irritation of the eyelid margin that may appear at any age.
Some of the symptoms of blepharitis include:
- Red and irritated eyelids
- Scales that stick to the base of the eyelashes
- Burning sensation in the eyes
- Loss of eyelashes in severe cases
- Crusting, itching, and swelling of the eyelids
Most people experience repeated episodes of inflammation separated by asymptomatic periods. Both eyes are usually affected at the same time, although one eye may cause more discomfort.
Although blepharitis is a chronic condition, you do not have to live with the symptoms of the disease. A daily cleansing routine can help you control these symptoms and prevent permanent scars on the eyelids. We do not recommend the use of baby shampoo to clean the eyelid margin as it can irritate the skin or cause an allergic reaction.
