Our eyelids are responsible for the shape and contour of our eyes. The reason that Caucasian eyes look rounder than Asian eyes is that their eyelids are shaped differently. The eyes of a young person look larger than those of an older adult mainly because their eyelid skin is taught and smooth, while the skin of an older person lacks elasticity and has lost volume. The eyes per se are not responsible for an aged appearance. It is the eyelids and the eyebrow that give a person a worn-out look.
As we age, the skin around our eyes becomes lax and the fat pockets underneath the eyebrow lose volume. This “descent and deflation” phenomenon allows the skin of the eyebrows to sag, filling the space between the eyelashes and the eyelid crease. As a result, the eyes become crowded; the skin of the upper eyelid hangs over the lashes and the eyelid crease seems to disappear. Many people start to experience eye fatigue, difficulty driving or decreased peripheral vision. Others may simply start to hate their aged look. Unfortunately, these events come with age and affect everyone, sooner or later.
What is an eyelid lift, and what does it accomplish?
An eyelid lift, or upper blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure where skin is repositioned to restore a youthful appearance. By carefully sculpting the delicate tissues of the eyelid and adding volume to this area, an eyelid plastic surgeon can revitalize a person’s look. Upper blepharoplasty is arguably the most rejuvenating plastic surgery operation and one of the most commonly performed procedures by facial aesthetic surgeons and oculoplastic surgeons.
A blepharoplasty operation can be done with local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. The operation usually takes 30 to 45 minutes to perform. The patient may experience mild discomfort with the injection of local anesthesia; the rest of the procedure is painless. After the surgery, there will be mild swelling and bruising on the operated area. These should subside in one to three weeks.
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a safe, quick, and very effective surgical procedure to rejuvenate a person’s appearance. We call it an “eyelid lift” because it works to elevate the excess skin that hangs over the eyelashes. An eyelid lift also adds volume to the area between the eyebrow and eyelid crease. This volume is important to restore a youthful eye shape and improve the quality of the skin around the eyes.
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty without a visible scar
Many patients wish they could have an eyelid lift to improve their appearance but they are afraid of having a permanent scar on their face. Fortunately, a blepharoplasty can be performed in a such a way as to avoid any visible scars after the procedure. The incision on the eyelid skin is carefully designed so that, when the skin has healed, the incision is hidden beneath the eyelid fold. This means that the scar will not be visible when the patient’s eyes are open. A small white line will be visible on the upper eyelid skin with the eyes closed.
