It is no mere cliché that the eyes are “the window to the soul”. If you doubt this, try frowning at a 5-year-old boy, and then convince him that you are happy. Or think of the multiple times your friends and colleagues have asked you if you feel tired because they can’t help noticing those bags under your eyes. You may feel energized, but the expression lines around your eyes and the loose skin that hangs over the lashes make you look exhausted. In today’s blog, we are going to tackle the latter, i.e., excess upper eyelid skin.
Where does excess upper eyelid skin come from, and how can I get rid of it?
Loose skin on the upper lids is a direct consequence of microscopic changes on the collagen framework of our skin, brought about by sun exposure, facial animation, and the passage of time. As we age, the thin skin of the upper eyelids loses its natural elasticity and becomes less pliable and more irregular. Environmental factors, such as smoking and poor dietary habits, may accelerate the aging process. On the other hand, you may be the healthiest person you know, but you notice that you’re starting to look like one of your parents. Unfortunately, genes cannot be modified… at least until now.
Now that we understand what causes this droopy eyelid skin, let’s talk about the most effective way to get rid of it. The answer lies in a quick, safe, and elegant surgical procedure called blepharoplasty. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty, also known as eye lift surgery, is the most frequent operation performed by eyelid surgeons and one of the most common plastic surgery procedures carried out on the human body. A blepharoplasty operation may be a purely aesthetic procedure, or it may be implemented for functional purposes, with the objective to improve the patient’s vision.
This surgery accomplishes three main goals (the three R’s): remove loose skin that hangs over the lashes, restore eyelid shape and contour, and rejuvenate the area around the eyes.
First goal (remove loose eyelid skin): During your preoperative consultation, your surgeon will measure the amount of skin that can be safely removed without risking lagophthalmos (the inability to close the eyes). The day of the operation, the doctor will mark the eyelid in a way that will make the scar unnoticeable. After application of local anesthesia, an incision is made and the excess tissue is carefully removed with microsurgical instruments.
Second goal (restore eyelid shape and contour): This step begins in the consultation room. The eyelid specialist will analyze your facial anatomy and the shape of your eyes (Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic) and will plan accordingly. Restoring the contour of your eyelids is essential to achieve a harmonious and natural result.
Third goal (rejuvenate the area around your eyes): Regardless of the objective, whether functional or aesthetic, a blepharoplasty must preserve the delicate balance between the anatomical structures surrounding the eyes. Eyelid shape and contour must conform to a set of aesthetic principles that embrace individual facial characteristics and ethnic traits. Oculoplastic surgeons have received extensive and comprehensive training in the art of eyelid surgery and they are especially mindful of this goal.
