Eyelid ptosis, also known as droopy eyelid, is a frequent condition in kids and adults.
It may affect one or both upper eyelids, but the ptosis is usually asymmetrical.
The cause of ptosis depends on the age of the patient and onset of symptoms.
Eyelid ptosis may be:
- Congenital: droopy eyelid present at birth or in early childhood.
- Acquired: noticeable in older adults.
- Post traumatic: caused by eyelid muscle trauma.
Acquired (involutional) ptosis is the most common type. It occurs when the muscles responsible for eyelid opening stretch or their tone is inadequate to maintain lid elevation.
Treatment is always surgical. Ptosis surgery is an outpatient procedure done under local anesthesia.
The operation may be done through the skin or using a posterior approach.
Patients are instructed to refrain from heavy lifting and exercise for a week.
The outcome of the surgery is evident at one month postop.
