Entropion is a common medical condition in which the eyelashes turn inward and rub against the surface of the eye.
It is caused by laxity of the eyelid tissues and poor function of the lower eyelid retractor muscles. Patients with entropion have constant irritation of the affected eye, tearing, and a foreign body sensation. The only effective treatment for eyelid entropion is surgery, which consists of tightening the lateral canthal tendon and suturing the eyelid retractors.
Fortunately, this surgery is safe and may be performed with local anesthesia. This procedure has a success rate of about 98%, making it one of the most effective oculoplastic surgery operations.
